car2go and Potsdamer Platz Management GmbH have launched Europe’s first e-carsharing street in the Potsdamer Platz area, along with other partners. car2go’s customers can use not only the company’s first 16 smart fortwo cars with electric drive but also the eight charging columns in Rudolf-von-Gneist-Gasse.

Gernot Lobenberg, the director of the Berlin Agency for Electromobility, views car2go’s addition of electric cars to its fleet not only as a boost to the city’s already strong carsharing services, but also as another sign that Berlin-Brandenburg is becoming a leading European metropolis for electromobility. "Carsharing plays an important role in numerous projects associated with the ?Berlin-Brandenburg International Showcase for Electromobility’,” he noted. The trend toward "using instead of owning” plus the relatively short distances traveled make Berlin an ideal market for e-carsharing.

Thomas Schmalfuß, the CEO of Potsdamer Platz Management GmbH (PPMG), said that   "we want to set new standards with Europe’s first e-carsharing street”. The Potsdamer Platz area sees as many as 100,000 people a day, and they’re all on the move. "Electromobility represents a milestone in urban mobility. We’re pleased to be working together with such a strong partner as car2go to put Berlin into motion on a sustainable basis. Berlin’s first fleet of e-smarts is an attractive addition to our quarter.”

Stefan Müller, CEO of car2go Europe GmbH, noted that  "we announced the launch in the spring. We are now making good on our promise this year already and integrating the first electric cars into our Berlin fleet. This is a fantastic opportunity for our customers to see that battery-powered drive systems work very well in everyday traffic.”

Trips with these fully electric car2go vehicles currently have to be started and ended at the site reserved exclusively for them on Potsdamer Platz. The price for using them is the same as for cars with gasoline engines, namely 29 cents a minute. The charging points supplied by Vattenfall use electricity exclusively from renewable sources. This means that the electric cars from car2go are completely free of emissions.
